Band History

The band started life as Preston Youth Big Band in 1976. Ten Years later it grew up and changed its name to ‘The Wessex Big Band’. Today it continues to grow and entertain people of all ages.

The band draws people from all walks of life, professions and backgrounds. Some members are professional musicians, or, associated with performing arts whilst others are enthusiastic armatures.

The band was originally formed by Alan Brown MBE who lead the band for decades. We now have a new musical director, Seth Nordin, a professional musician who leads the big band with enthusiasm and drive to inspire musicians of all abilities to take part and perform with the band. He has performed with top rank bands and orchestras, and has a tremendous amount of musical knowledge.

The band has played two tours in the United States and five on the Continent, taking in France, The Netherlands and Austria.

Over the years the band has appeared at many prestigious events/venues, made TV/& radio appearances, help raise money for charities, featured a West End Star vocalist and even played for royalty.
